10 Common Types Of New York Medical Malpractice Which Cause Victims Serious Injuries And Families Serious Problems

Medical Malpractice Mistakes

There are many different possible types of medical malpractice mistakes, some are worse than others, but most are almost always preventable and avoidable if the healthcare staff properly exercises his or her training, skill, and knowledge. Some of the most common instances of New York medical malpractice include the following:

  1. Surgical errors – these are errors caused by surgeons and surgical teams during a procedure or operation. Surgical errors occur when the surgery itself is done wrong, such as an improper incision, cutting a nerve, damaging arteries, or failing at performing the surgery itself.
  2. Wrong patient surgery – wrong patent surgery is just how it sounds, and it sounds like it would never happen but it does all too often. This is when the healthcare provider treats the wrong patient and performs a procedure or surgery on the wrong patient. This is almost always medical malpractice.
  3. Wrong site surgery – this is where the surgical team performs a surgery on the wrong body part or site. So when a patient needs a left knee surgery but the surgical team performs a right knee surgery, that is a wrong site surgery which is medical malpractice.
  4. Foreign objects – when a surgical team leaves foreign objects such as sponges, tools, gloves, or other related objects inside of a patient after surgery, that is medical malpractice.
  5. Patient falls – some patients are fall risks, such as elderly, those with strong medications, leg/hip surgery candidates, and other related conditions. When one of these patients falls, they can get serious hurt and that is medical malpractice on the part of the hospital for not preventing them from walking or falling.
  6. Dropping a patient – when a hospital team is transferring a patient from one table to another, or one bed to another, or to a stretcher or from a stretcher, healthcare staff could drop the patient. This is medical malpractice.
  7. Missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis – when a healthcare provider misses a diagnosis or misdiagnoses a condition, that can be medical malpractice if a reasonably prudent physician would have made the proper diagnosis.
  8. Delay in emergency care – an emergency room is a busy place, but this does not mean that emergency room staff can fail to triage or delay emergency care. When a patient is in serious condition or may be having a heart attack, the delay in emergency room care could be fatal.
  9. Hospital acquired infections – there are some hospital acquired infections which are drug resistant, very difficult to cure, and extremely deadly. These are largely preventable, and almost always medical malpractice.
  10. Medication errors/prescription errors – medications and prescriptions are controlled substances, and intended to take a drug and cause a certain outcome. When the wrong drug is taken, the wrong outcome could come out which is very dangerous and medical malpractice.
