Boxer Settles Medical Malpractice Lawsuit For $22 Million In New York

Medical Malpractice Mistakes

Four years ago, boxer Magomed Abdusalamov suffered brain damage from a boxing match at Madison Square Garden.  He lost the match and began to vomit immediately thereafter.  He exhibited odd symptoms and was taken tot he hospital.  But boxing doctors and medical providers did not do a proper assessment on him, and thought he was going to the hospital for a cut on his face.  However, he was really suffering a brain clot in his brain.

The diagnosis was delayed and no treatment was provided until it was too late.  It resulted in an emergency surgery after he suffered several unnecessary strokes.  He ended up going into a coma for weeks and was hospitalized for more than 10 months, including the need for an in-patient rehabilitation.  He was greatly injured by a simple misdiagnosis that could have easily be made and prevented.

Now, he is paralyzed on his right side and unable to walk.  His speech is greatly limited to mumbling and sounds, and it is unlikely he will ever be able to talk again.  He needs nearly around-the-clock medical care.

He now settled for $22 million dollars because of the New York State Athletic Commission’s negligence in caring for him that night, the delay in misdiagnosing his medical emergency, and the lack of proper care.

As a result, this once finely tuned athlete is now significantly disabled both cognitively and physically.  He was also a great boxer, being 18 and 1.  His life has suffered greatly by the failure to diagnose the blood clot due to medical malpractice.  His entire family is also effected by the loss of his income and ability to care for himself now.
