Eye care professionals often treat astigmatism, farsightedness, nearsightedness, and infant eye disease. An eye doctor can go from performing surgery on the eye of one patient to performing eye exams and giving another patient a prescription for eye glasses in one day. Common services eye doctors perform include:

• Diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma,
• Eye exams,
• Laser eye surgery,
• Perform eye surgery for many different reasons (such as glaucoma and cataracts),
• Plastic surgery,
• Treat eye damage (such as cuts and burns on the eye),
• Treat eye problems that are related to diabetes and other diseases,
• Treat iritis, and
• Treat patients who have crossed eyes.

It is expected that eye doctors will perform their services in a certain way. They are expected to follow the steps necessary to provide good patient care. However, eye doctors do not always do so. An eye doctor may rush treatment, lose focus, and/or fail to keep up with the developments in their field. Eye doctors can be negligent if they violated their duty to their patient by doing something another eye doctor in the area under similar circumstances would not have done. If the doctor’s error directly results in injury, the doctor could the held responsible and have to pay.

Mistakes eye doctors may make include:

• Failure to administer a complete eye exam.
• Failure to diagnose a patient’s disease.
• Failure to receive adequate informed consent from their patients.
• Failure to receive a complete and proper patient history.
• Failure to use tools that are clean and sterile tools.
• Misdiagnosis.
• Post-surgical care that is subpar.
• Prescribing incorrect medication or the wrong dosage of that medication.
• Surgical errors.
