Medication Errors And Medical Malpractice

Laws

One of the leading types of medical negligent is administration of the wrong medication to a patient.  This can lead to serious injury, illness, and even death.

Many mistakes can result in medical negligence resulting from the administration of the wrong medication, including:

  • Simply administering the wrong medication.
  • Providing an improper dosage of the correct medicine.  This dosage may have been prescribed or given.
  • The incorrect medication may be provided to a person who has drug allergies, someone who is taking medication that result in adverse reaction when combined, or someone who has special health considerations that could be affected by the wrong medication.
  • When the wrong medication is administered it may cause medical problems that could be improperly treated if not recognized.

Some groups of people are particularly at risk for health problems that result from administration of the wrong medication.  A child who is given the wrong medication does not have the immune systems or chemical tolerance to handle the wrong medication.  Also, when administering medication to children, it is important that the proper dosages be provided, following specific age and weight factor.  Due to weight and age requirements, overdose is more likely when a child is given the wrong medication.

It is important for medical professionals to follow the following rules when administering medication:

  1. The right medication to
  2. The right patient in
  3. The right dose by
  4. The right route at
  5. The right time.

If these rules are not followed properly, then injury may occur.  When this happens, then medical malpractice may have occurred.

There have been studies that indicate that most of the cases when the wrong medication has been administered could have easily been avoided when the proper medical precautions have been taken.  If you suspect that you or a loved one has received the wrong medication or the wrong dosage from a health care profession, you may be able to seek compensation for your injuries or illness.  You may be able to seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, disability, and pain and suffering.  Contact an experienced Kingston, New York medical malpractice attorney as soon as possible to evaluate your case.
