Scary Truth About Smoking–Tobacco Companies Can’t Hide From The Deaths Caused Daily By Smoking

Cases

The U.S. Justice Department is amping up its campaign to disclose the truth about smoking. Now, instead of simply warning that “smoking is dangerous to your health”, the Justice Department wants to require tobacco companies to put a warning on cigarettes that “smoking kills 1,200 Americans every day”. Amen and it’s about time.

The Justice Department took it to another level and also wants to require that tobacco companies disclose that: “We falsely marketed low tar and light cigarettes as less harmful than regular cigarettes to keep people smoking and sustain our profits.” I love it.

The Justice Department wants even more on the disclosure: “We told you that smoking is not addictive and all it takes is willpower to quit. Here’s the truth: Smoking is very addictive. And it’s not easy to quit.” Amen to that!

Big tobacco has been hiding and minimizing the harmful effects of its product for years. Of course, big tobacco will fight the new disclosure sought by the U.S. Justice Department with all its might, but their requests were recently denied by a federal judge. The truth hurts and in this case, big tobacco stands to lose thousands of future smokers with the new warnings on their cigarettes.

Big tobacco sells a product that kills–it’s that simple. If Honda or Toyota made cars that were dangerous and killed consumers, there would be a landslide of product liability cases against them. But not big Tobacco. Big Tobacco should stop hiding behind the reality that its product kills 1,200 people a day.
