Common Birth Injuries Due to New York Medical Malpractice

Birth Injury

There are many different types of birth injuries which could be caused by New York medical malpractice.  As a Kingston medical malpractice lawyer for many years, I know that these forms of birth injuries are catastrophic to not just the baby, but the entire family.  And really birth injuries are just not fair to the baby, who is completely reliant on the years of medical school and training which fail the baby.  This is why New York medical malpractice lawyers take birth injuries with particularly vigor, because many of us feel horrible about the huge injustice.

There are many common types of birth injuries that could occur to a baby in New York.  These include some of the most common that you should be aware of, such as the following:

Brachial Plexus Injuries – this is a serious nerve injury to the nerves originating from a baby’s cervical spine and extending down through the baby’s arm.  This gives sensation and feeling to the baby’s arm, but also movement.  These injuries occur due to pulling, tugging, stretching, and otherwise aggressive movements to the arm which result in the nerve injuries.

Cerebral Palsy – This is a catastrophic injuries caused by serious medical malpractice due to birth trauma and likely fetal hypoxia conditions.  This means that a baby may have had a lack of oxygen at birth due to umbilical cord ruptures or extreme pressure, prolonged contractions, or other complications which limit oxygen flow to the baby.

Extraction Injuries – Injuries caused by forceps or vacuum extractors can also cause serious trauma to a baby, particularly the baby’s face.  When these tools are used excessively, they can result in disfigurement, nerve injuries, and broken bones.

Facial Paralysis – The cranial nerves are in the face and are particularly susceptible to injury during the birthing process.  Extreme pressures from prolonged contractions, use of extraction tools, and other pressures on a baby’s face could result in permanent nerve damage.
