John Fisher has spent his life working on behalf of his clients who have suffered a catastrophic injury. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide attempts in the United States are rising. It is the 10th leading cause of death, resulting in 44,965 deaths each year and averaging 123 suicides each day. However, for each suicide, there are 25 unsuccessful attempts at suicide, meaning the opportunity to intervene and provide prevention assistance is possible. In addition, suicide costs the U.S. $51 billion each year.

Accessible mental health care would have a positive impact on susceptible individuals who suffer from suicidal tendencies. Furthermore, the leading method of suicide involves using firearms. Legislation could make health care mandatory for people who need it, profoundly helping them, as well as limiting or regulating access to the firearms which cause the injuries.

Mr. Fisher has established a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a student who is interested in these issues. Applicants should discuss how legislation addressing U.S. health care and/or access to firearms could help these people.
