Under federal regulations, all nursing homes must have written policies that describe the rights of the residents. The nursing home is required by law to make this policy statement – the “Nursing Home Resident’s Bill of Rights” – available to any resident who requests it.
The rights include the right to be informed about your medical condition, the right to participate in the plan of care, the right to choose your own physician, and the right to be free from physical restraints. Upon your admission to the nursing home, you should make sure that you get a copy of the Bill of Rights so that you have a clear understanding of your rights in a nursing home.
