Surgeons are known to and expected to have steady hands and a delicate touch. However, undergoing any type of surgery carries with it an inherent risk. Scalpels, lasers, and scissors are used by surgeons to cut the flesh and operate on unhealthy organs. Retractors and other tools are used to minimize the chance that the surgeon will cut another, healthy organ. Despite these measures however, surgeons will too often puncture, perforate, or cut organs, nerves, or other tissue during surgery. If cut, there are certain organs, such as bowels, intestines, or the stomach that will leak harmful materials into the body cavity. If this occurs, the health of the patient is threatened.
Common Symptoms of a punctured organ or perforation include:
- Fever or chills
- Nausea or vomiting
- Pain in the abdominal area, hip, or groin
- Severe bleeding or hemorrhaging
Once a bowel or colon has been perforated, it can progress into peritonitis, a very serious infection. Once this infection enters the bloodstream it will quickly travel throughout the body. Once the infection enters the bloodstream it is known as sepsis and if it not treated it can lead to death.
The results of organ puncture or perforation can be very severe, and sometimes are even fatal. This is why if an organ is punctured or perforated, it is extremely important that the surgical team recognizes the error immediately and take the appropriate measures to limit the damage.
