Clinic Aims For Better Treatments Of Cerebral Palsy

Birth Injury

Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that are typically related to the inability of an individual to control motor function.  This disorder is the result of injury or abnormal development of the brain prior to, during, or after birth.  In some instances, cerebral palsy can result from New York medical negligence during birth resulting in the baby not getting enough oxygen.

A new clinic hopes to better improve the lives of people who suffer from cerebral palsy.  The idea for this clinic is that children from around the world to be treated with high-intensity therapy.  At the clinic, people with weakness on one side of their body will go through a therapy that will limit the use of their stronger arm and hand.  The hope is that the person will be encouraged to use the weaker side of their body, further developing that arm and hand.  Therapy will start at the clinic but will also continue at home. Essentially, the clinic hopes to reverse instances of Albany medical malpractice with new and experimental technology.

The National Institutes of Health have given the clinic a $4.2 million grant with additional financial support from certain state offices and private donors.  Throughout the therapy process, researchers will follow the progress of 135 children between the ages of 2 and 8.  The therapy can last for as long as three to six hours a day, for five days a week, for as long as a month.  Treatment will include games and activities that the child chooses.

This new clinic and its therapies is promising news for those with cerebral palsy.  While this is not a cure, there are hopes that it will lead to improvements for everyone.  Albany birth injuries causing cerebral palsy are serious and require extensive resources to help manage the condition.  Being able to help mitigate that through this light therapy is incredibly important.

When a child is born and they have cerebral palsy, parents are generally advised to look into the cause of the condition.  Was it a medical professional’s negligence during delivery?  Did they fail to order a cesarean section quickly enough?  Was your fetus in distress and the signs ignored?  Depending on the circumstances of your situation there may be grounds to file a medical malpractice lawsuit.
