Diabetes Medical Errors: Kingston Medical Malpractice Attorney Discusses

Medical Malpractice Mistakes

There are more than 25 million people in the United States who have diabetes according to the American Diabetes Association.  It is a disease without a cure, but it can be managed.  A person with diabetes can lead a healthy life as long as they are given proper treatment from a physician who is skilled and competent.

People who have this disease face many difficulties but they can take steps to help them manage their blood sugar levels.  When a physician treats a person who has diabetes, they are obligated to adequately treat them and educate patients about the disease.

There are different forms of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, and gestational.  Type 2 diabetes is a form that is frequently undiagnosed.  It is a slow moving condition that affects adults.  It can cause skin infections, kidney problems, poor healing, and trouble with vision.  However, since the symptoms tend to be mild, it may not be diagnosed for many years.

Type 1 diabetes is not misdiagnosed as often as type 2.  The symptoms are more severe and the people will generally seek out medical attention.  However, doctors have been known to treat the symptoms of the type of diabetes without actually diagnosing the medical condition.

If diabetes is not treated the patient’s quality of life will be drastically reduced.  People who have diabetes can suffer from blindness, kidney failure, diabetic foot ulcers, amputation of a limb, or death because of the negligent treatment of the disease.

Undiagnosed Diabetes

Many people suffer from diabetes without realizing it, with millions of people affected in the United States.  Diabetes can be misdiagnosed for many different reasons including:

  • The symptoms are not very serious so the patient does not seek medical care.
  • Symptoms do not always appear during the early stages of the medical condition.
  • Symptoms can also be vague.

If you or a loved one has suffered because of undiagnosed diabetes, you could contact an experienced medical malpractice attorney as soon as possible to review your case.
