Nerve Injuries Cause Serious Pain

Medical Malpractice Mistakes

Nerves transfer sensory reception to and from the brain.  If a person suffers nerve damage, numerous side effects can result and their quality of life can be drastically altered.  Nerve damage is a frequent ailment that results in different types of sensations, including mild tingling or loss of feeling.  There are some cases where nerve damage can result in paralysis or even death.  Nerve damage can result from many different causes, such as trauma, fracture, disease, or medical malpractice.

There are several types of medical malpractice that can result in nerve damage, including anesthesia errors, surgical errors, birth injury, failure to diagnose a condition, cosmetic surgery errors.  These negligent acts are often preventable and medical professionals can be held liable for their careless actions.  Doctors and nurses can prevent nerve damage through attentive practices.

There are inherent risks when a patient undergoes surgery.  If incorrectly performed, invasive surgery could possibly result in nerve damage.  A negligent surgeon may sever nerves during a surgical procedure.

A common surgery in the United States is back surgery.  People who suffer from neck, spinal, and lower back pain rely on surgery as a way to relieve their pain.  Some types of back surgery carry minor risk while others carry significant risk.  Surgeries that involve significant risk include disc removal or vertebral fusion.  If a back surgery is incorrectly performed, serious nerve damage may occur.  If the back surgery involves the manipulation or removal of vertebrae, intervertebral discs, or portions of the spinal cord can pose a very serious risk of nerve damage.  If a surgeon is negligent or carless and fails to meet the standard of care, severe nerve damage can potentially result.

Whether nerve damage results in a minor or serious life-altering condition depends on the severity and location of the injury.  Common side effects of nerve damage include:

  • Acute
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Chronic parathesia
  • Loss of feeling
  • Loss of mobility
  • Paralysis
  • Death
