Bloody Sheets and Rusty Tools at Surgical Center—Yikes!

Medical Malpractice Mistakes, Surgery

New York Medical Malpractice Lawyer Shares Horrors of NJ Surgical Center with Bloody Sheets and Rusty Tools at Surgical Center

News sources are reporting that a New Jersey surgical center, which has been on the news regarding a possible exposure to HIV and hepatitis B and C, also had other horrible violations and issues such as bloody and used sheets, and rusty surgical tools.  Yikes!  Rusty tools at surgical center!  As a New York medical malpractice lawyer, this absolutely frightens me and screams a failure to exercise reasonable care as what a reasonably prudent physician would under similar circumstances.  This is medical negligence.

Some other horrible violations include the following in a report:

  • staff failed to regularly wash their hands;
  • IV bags and tubes used on multiple patients;
  • Powerful opioids handled recklessly;
  • Almost a decade-old infection control plan;
  • Bloody and used sheets for new patients;
  • Rusty tools; and
  • Other egregious mistakes.

This is a horrible case here of putting profits about safety.  Or maybe just incompetence above reason.  There is no reason ever for a surgical team to use any tool that was rusty.  Not only does rust contain its own source of bacteria (tetanus), but it could harbor other dangerous bacteria and keep HIV, hepatitis, and other infection materials in the gaps of the tool where the rust is.  This is horrible!

 Don’t you think this appalling and horrible?  I absolutely do.  This is extreme medical malpractice and just basic negligence.  But what do you think?  I would love to hear from you!  Leave a comment or I also welcome your phone call on my toll-free cell at 1-866-889-6882 or you can drop me an e-mail at jfisher@fishermalpracticelaw.com.  You are always welcome to request my FREE book, The Seven Deadly Mistakes of Malpractice Victims, at the home page of my website at www.protectingpatientrights.com.
