Wrongful Death Caused by a Pulmonary Embolism Misdiagnosis: Albany Medical Malpractice Lawyer

Hospitals, Medical Malpractice Mistakes, Misdiagnosis, Wrongful Death

A pulmonary embolism, or PE, is a very serious and life-threatening medical condition.  This is a blood clot in the lungs of a patient.  It usually comes from a clot in the legs, particularly from a condition known as deep vein thrombosis or DVT.  When this occurs it is critical to get an accurate and quick diagnosis and treatment, otherwise it could result in the wrongful death of a patient due to Albany medical malpractice.

The symptoms of a PE can mirror other symptoms which may make it harder to diagnosis.  However, there is no reason why a trained emergency room nurse, doctor, or even just a technician should not be able to diagnosis this condition.  The symptoms predominantly include the following:

  • Shortness of breath;
  • Wheezing or coughing;
  • Coughing up blood;
  • Chest or back pain;
  • Dizziness, light headedness, double vision;
  • Inability to catch one’s breath;
  • Rapid heart beat and pulse;
  • Sweating; and
  • Other symptoms.

When a patient presents to an emergency room with these symptoms, he or she should be immediately treated to avoid very serious health complications or wrongful death.  Failing to quickly identify and treat the PE could be Albany medical malpractice.  And the shame is the treatment for most PEs is to just administer some clot busting medications or drugs which help to dissolve the clot.  Other treatment may be a quick surgery to pull out the blood clot.  There is no reason that a patient should wrongfully die from a PE.

Victims who have a PE remain for a long time in their lungs are slowly causing permanent damage.  In the medical industry, time is tissue.  The more time that oxygen deprivation occurs, the more tissue that is going to be damaged.  When too much tissue is damaged, it results in permanent injury.
